Chapter 6: Wives

There have been many misconceptions of what the Bible says, in general, about marriage and the role of the husband and, in particular, the wife. We would like to address the role of the wife in this section and help clarify some verses that have been given a bad rap. Also, we would like to show how important it is to stay within biblical guidelines, if we desire a happy marriage that will last for life.

Discussion Questions
  1. Women, in what areas do you think a man may need your support?
  2. Men, in your mind, what does it mean for a woman to defend you?
  3. Does the woman’s role as the supporter and defender clash with the man’s role to care for his spouse as the physically weaker partner?
  4. Is supporting and defending physical? Give some examples.
  5. Can supporting and defending be non-physical? Give some examples.
  6. What way does the carnal world come against your mate?
Discussion Questions
  1. Discuss with the group the challenges you believe most women face with being submissive to their husbands?
  2. Are there times when being submissive is not difficult? If so, then how?
  3. Do you believe submissive means completely passive or inactive in decision-making with your husband?
  4. Women, ask the men in your lives how they view submissive behavior? 
  5. Does submissive behavior mean exactly the same to everyone?

  1. How do you think you can develop your husband's confidence in you?
  2. Reflect quietly on the times in your marriage you were not so noble in character. What circumstances led to you losing your nobility?
  3. Discuss how you compare the responsibilities of a modern day woman to a Proverbs 31 woman?

  1. How do you think the eye can recognize the beauty from within?
  2. Discuss how you think external sources of beauty effect one’s internal purity?
  3. What are behaviors you can adopt that will make you more beautiful within?
  4. ​What are the different responses to external beauty?
Discussion Questions
  1. Discuss strategies for helping a believing husband realize his calling as spiritual leader.
  2. Reflect on how you have felt or handled situations that require spiritual leadership or a decision where your spouse has not responded the way you wanted him to respond.
  3. Discuss what would be key characteristics an unbelieving husband can learn about Christ through his wife.
